You do have the option to utilize the air brakes on your 2023 Freightliner Cascadia to control electric trailer brakes using the Hayes Air Actuated Trailer Brake Controller, part # HA100400C. However, we mostly recommend just using an electric brake controller since they tie into the stop light switch of the tow vehicle, making it irrelevant what kind of brakes it has.

For an electric brake controller I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. A very solid, user friendly brake controller.

Of course, as with any electric brake controller, you will need a 7-way for the trailer to connect to. If you don't have that, you can use part # ETBC7 to get one. This kit will come with virtually everything you will need to wire the semi truck with a 7 way. Keep in mind that you would have to cut off the 4-flat connector on the back of the # ETBC7 kit and hardwire it in. The white wire goes to ground. Green goes to right turn/stop, yellow to left turn and stop, brown to taillights, and then blue to the brake output of the brake controller. We sell the 4 wire by the foot with part # 16-4B-1 if you need additional wire.

I have linked a few of our install videos for the # ETBC7 kit below, if you want to get a better idea of the install process.

I have one question with hard wiring the 7 way to the back of the truck. Do you have to wire together the brake light at the turn signals together to get brake lights on the trailer or does the brake controller turn on the brake lights when the pedal is pressed?

@Kyle yes most trailers use a combined wiring system where the brake lights and turn signals are on circuit so that is how you would want to wire your 7-way.
