Question:
I am looking to replace the tires on my boat trailer. I currently have 5.30R12 radial tires but I cannot find any in stock. What is the difference between the radial and bias ply tires?

Expert Reply:
Bias-ply tires are engineered with a crisscross pattern of overlapping body plies, typically at 30 to 45-degree opposing angles. This makes for a more stable sidewall for the tire, but is more of a precursor design to radial tires. Radial tires have steel belts oriented in a 90-degree angle, give a much smoother ride, lower fuel consumption, better traction and flotation, improved cut resistance in the tread area, and run much cooler than bias. Overall, radial tires are the better option but tend to cost more. If you're regularly taking your boat out then I recommend looking for some radial tires, if you occasional take the boat out then you can save some money and get bias-ply tires like the Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire - 5.30-12 - Load Range D # AM10068.
