Can Curt Tow Bar Wiring Kit C63CR Install on Truck with Separate Turn Signals Brake Lights

Updated 04/09/2024 | Published 02/09/2023

Question:

Hi. I wired this up to a 2022 Ford F150 Platinum, LED lights. In this model year unlike my 2017 where the two are combined there are separate brake and turn light wires. I hooked up the Curt harness to all three, but Im not getting anything on the turn lights. It is flashing the brake lights as turn signals, like a 2 wire system, but the separate yellow turn flashers are not doing anything. Any ideas? I was hoping to not have to put in a brake relay for the supplemental braking, that it would turn on the brake lights, but that the turn signals would still be flashing. Im not getting the turn light to flash at all, just the brake lights. Thanks!

The Curt tow bar wiring kit part # C63CR that you referenced can install on a vehicle that has separate taillights like you have but there is a different wiring required when installed on a vehicle like then instead of a combined setup.

You would run the green wire to the right turn signal, the red wire to the brake light circuit, the yellow wire to the left turn circuit, and the brown wire to the taillight circuit.

Jameson, I purchased this kit based on the understanding that it would work with a three wire system. My vehicle has three separate wires, 1 for tail, 1 for brake, 1 for turn. Other kits actually turn your brake and tail lights into the turn signals. As I understood it, this kit would allow me to connect and use my actual separate turn signal lights for turn signaling. After installing the kit as you recommended above which is also outlined in the instruction manual I was disappointed to find this kit also turns your tail and brake lights in the turn signals and the actual turn signal bulbs do not operate. After connecting wires and testing I have tail lights, brake lights and both turn signals but, they are operating through the brake and tail light bulbs. Have I connected something wrong? Or is this the intended operation of this system?

@Josh When wiring up a 3 to 2 converter like this the standard way would eliminate the dedicated turn signals from working but there is a work around. Instead of cutting the wires that run to the turn signals and running them only to the converter box you'd instead need to keep the connection to the dedicated turn signals and tap into that circuit without severing the connection. So basically you could run all three wires to the same connection. The dedicated turn signal circuit, the wire to the converter, and then the wire to the dedicated turn circuit. This will give the converter box the circuit it needs while still allowing the turn signal to function.

@JamesonC Thank you for the reply. I'm not sure I fully understand what you're saying. Could you please talk to me in wire color terms? Meaning which color/ input/output side wires from your kit plug into which circuit of my vehicle? Thank you, Josh

@JamesonC Yes, all the labels are still on the harness.
