Can a Surge Brake Coupler Be Replaced With a Curt No Latch On a Mastercraft Trailer?

Published 02/03/2023

Question:

How can I install the no latch curt coupler on my Mastercraft surge coupler trailer. The surge coupler is a constant pain as I have to store on an incline and it always is hard to install the boat. The curt holes don’t look like they’d line up with trailer at all. I don’t need the trailer brakes as I only travel about a mile.

Based on some information I could find I believe you currently have a actuator like the Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator # DX53FR on your Mastercraft trailer. To switch to a Curt QuickPin No-Latch Trailer Coupler # C54UR you will need to ensure your trailer will not exceed 3,500lbs when fully loaded. You will also need to verify with your local laws your trailer is being legally operated as many laws will require trailer brakes if over a certain weight no matter how far you tow. Since the A-60 actuator is welded onto a 3" wide straight tongue it would have to be permanently removed to install the Curt coupler. You will need to drill holes for the Curt since your previous coupler is not a bolt on.
