Question:
Im looking to purchase a used 3L diesel vehicle with class IV tow hitch package. These generally tow about 7,000 - 8,000 lbs, which i understsand means they support a tongue weight of about 10 or 700-800 lbs... why is it that the class IV dual hitch adapters are only rated for 400 lbs tongue weight?

Expert Reply:
The dual hitch adapters aren't really made for heavy duty towing which is why they don't carry very high tongue weight ratings. The Malone 2" Dual Purpose Hitch Receiver part # MPG544 for example only has a 400 lb tongue weight rating. The Curt Multipurpose Ball Mount with 2" Receiver for Bike Racks and Cargo Carriers part # D210 maintains a higher capacity at 750 lbs. If you have the extra funds, you can obtain much higher capacities with the Gen-Y Adjustable 2-Ball Mounts like part # 325-GH-214.
