Is Weight Distribution Necessary on Boat and Trailer Weighing 7000 Pounds Being Towed By GMC Truck?

Question:

Probably asked this many times! I have a boat/trailer set up that weighs about 7000lbs. Tongue weight is 650lbs. Using a GMC 1500 truck 4dr/crew cab/4WD that has a GVWR of 7000lbs. GMC says should have weight dist hitch on anything over 5000lbs. Boat dealer says it isnt needed. What do you think? Max towing capacity of the vehicle is rated at 9600lbs. Thanks!

Generally speaking, we recommend a Weight Distribution System anytime the trailer and load being towed weigh more than 50 percent of the vehicle weight. I would also strongly recommend following any recommendations made by GMC regarding the use of Weight Distribution.

Because your trailer has a surge coupler, I would recommend the Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System, part # RP66560. This system is designed for trailers with tongue weights ranging from 600 to 1200 pounds, and is the only type of system compatible with trailers with surge couplers. Using a standard spring bar with the chain can interfere with the braking function of the surge coupler.

Using weight distribution will provide many benefits such as performance increases in steering, traction, and braking while also decreasing trailer sway.
