Question:
Im looking to add brakes to a 5x8 trailer for towing with an Outback. My understanding is that I need to replace the axle, but I cant seem to find one small enough for a 5x8. Please let me know if you have any recommendations. I appreciate your help!

I have a solution for you, but the reason you are going to need to replace your axle is because a trailer that size is not going to have a brake mounting flange. The best option for you is going to depend on why you are adding brakes.
If you are just adding them for peace of mind, then your best option is going to have a custom axle made with brake flanges.
But if you are adding brakes to convert the trailer over to an off road trailer then your better option would be an axle-less system like the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System - Spindle w/Brake Flange # ASR2000S02. The Axle-Less system provides a smooth, quiet, safe ride and can eliminate the need for an axle. Suspension units with brake flanges replace your existing axle and operate independently and fits any frame width.
You can then use the Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K and the Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-35-SA for Hub/Drum and Brakes.
