Is Malone Seawing part # MPG113MD Good Choice for Carrying Kayaks
Published 04/06/2022 >
Question:
I have a 21 Subaru Forester. I have Malone rectangular bars attached to factory side rails. I have 2 Pungo 120 kayaks with Malone Seawings as the cradles. The guy who sold us the 2nd Pungo said he did not like the way the chines on the kayak hit on the Seawings when stapped down. Note we had a 45 mile drive home with the boat. Yes we had bow and stern lines. The boat stayed tight all the way home. Didnt move at all. The kayak guy thought I should dump the Malone components and spend another $1000.00 on a Yakima setup. I have used the bars for bikes and cargo racks and they have done well in the past. If the tie-down is good the only issue I see is the contact between the Seawings and the boat. There is no contact at the keel or hull between the chines and the keel. What are your thoughts as to supporting the boat at the chines? To me this is about as good as it gets.

Helpful Expert Reply:
The Malone Seawing part # MPG113MD is a solid choice for your kayaks. The guy you talked maybe didn't like them but there's no reason it wouldn't continue to work well for you. The chines are perfectly okay to support the kayak.
