how do you pick which spindle to use? 4inch or std? using on a std 16foot car trailer.

The drop spindle model you mentioned, part # A35RD545E would be used over the straight spindle model, part # A35RS545E if you wanted a lower deck height on your car trailer. Since you are most likely already using ramps, I cannot see how you would benefit from further lowering the trailer deck height. The straight spindle model would place your spindle center about 4 inches below the mounting surface of the unloaded trailer. The drop spindle model would place the spindle center about 1/4 inch below the mounting surface.
Keep in mind that a low deck height can compromise your ground clearance.
