Mounting Dexter 3,500LB Underslung Axle Below Leaf Springs Rather Than On Top

Published 01/08/2022

Question:

I bought two 3500 pound Dexter axles. Does it matter if the axles are mounted to the top or bottom of the leaf springs? I wanted a little more height on my trailer so I mounted them to the bottom of the leaf springs, but a friend told me they’re only made to be mounted on top of the leaf springs.

The Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Idler Hubs # 7359765-I has an underslung design so that they will mount on top of the leaf springs. The arch in the axle needs to rise in the center of the axle as this will allow for better ground clearance as well as ensure the axle carries the trailer weight properly.

The Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-384-00 will allow you to position the axle under your leaf springs to gain the additional trailer height you are wanting. These will maintain the correct orientation of the axle with it now mounted under the leaf springs. You will need one kit per axle.
