Determine Axle Rating by Measuring to Get Correct 2 Inch Wide Leaf Slipper Springs

Updated 12/17/2021 | Published 12/16/2021

Question:

My axle measures 2 inch x 2 inch box section. Is that a 2000 lbs axle? What spring rating do I need? I could find no markings on the axle.

In general, you can measure the diameter of an axle tube to get the rating, though it is more of a guideline and the only way to know for sure is by some identifying marker on the axle and contacting the manufacturer. However, since that isn't a possibility for you, then measuring the tube is the best option, just know that it isn't a 100 percent guarantee. Here are the general ratings:

- 1,000 lb – 2,000 lb Axles: 1-1/2 inch - 1-3/4 inch diameter
- 3,500 lb Axles: 2-3/8 inch diameter
- 6,000 lb – 7,200 lb Axles: 3 inch diameter
- 8,000 lb Axles: 3-1/2 inch diameter
- 9,000 lb Axles: 4 inch diameter
- 10,000 lb Or More Axles: 5 inch diameter

You said box section, so I believe you were talking about 2 inch wide slipper springs, so this will at least be a good guideline for you to get the right spring, and you'll want to get one the closest to your axle rating as possible, like the 4-Leaf Slipper Spring w/ Hook End for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles # SP-230275.

Also be sure your measurements line up, with the most important one being the distance from the center of the spring eye to the end of the spring. I have added a link below to our entire selection of 2-inch slipper springs for you as well.
