Will The HydraStar Electric Over Hydraulic Module Mess With Electric Brakes On My Other Trailers?
Question:
I am going to convert my boat trailer to Electric over Hydraulic Brakes. My Tow Vehicle is a 2011 Chevy, and the Integrated Brake Controller is not compatible with EOH Brakes. If I use the HydraStar, # HBA16, and adapter # HBA-CAM, this should work well, correct? My question is, can I still use the electric brakes on my other trailers after I add this adapter? Will I have to put in some sort of switch?

Basically what the HydraStar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator Adapter Module # HBA-CAM is doing is supplying more load/resistance when the brake controller is applying the brake signal to the trailer. This is essentially to fool the factory brake controller in your 2011 Chevy Silverado into thinking there actually are electric brakes and it is indeed needed for this purpose on your truck. From what I could find out, your factory controller can handle up to 8 brake assemblies (4 axles with brakes), so as long as none of your trailers have this many brakes already, you will not need to use any kind of switch.
However, if you do have trailers with this many brakes and you will be mounting the # HBA-CAM on the vehicle side, then I do recommend using some kind of toggle switch, like the # PK34218. This will be a 3 position switch and will allow you to have the power go through the # HBA-CAM when needed, and then switched back to "normal mode" for when it isn't needed.
With all that being said, the quickest and easiest way around this is to install it on the trailer you are converting to electric over hydraulic brakes. These are sealed and weather resistant, though they should not be submerged in water, and can be mounted and wired anywhere on the trailer as long as it is inline with the brake signal going to the HydraStar # HBA16 actuator. As you have several trailers, this is the way I recommend going.
