Will the Kuat Beta Folding 2 Bike Rack Fit on a 2011 Subaru Outback

Updated 06/19/2013 | Published 06/17/2013

Question:

Will it fit on my 2011 Subaru Outback? If so, does it block access to the rear storage? Does it reduce the overall vehicle clearance? How far does the hitch stick out from the car? How far does the full bike rack stick out from the car? Thanks so much. It looks perfect for my needs, but I want to be sure.

The Kuat Beta Folding 2 Bike Carrier # B202-114, is designed to be used with 1-1/4 inch hitch receiver openings. If your 2011 Subaru Outback has a 1-1/4 inch hitch receiver opening then this bike rack is considered a fit for your vehicle.

If you do not have a trailer hitch I would recommend the Draw-Tite # 75673, which is a Class III hitch that has a 2 inch receiver hitch opening.

It is possible that your vehicle has a 2 inch hitch receiver opening and if that is the case then you can use a hitch adapter like the Kuat # D101. Of if you would prefer you can get the same bike rack that is intended for use in a 2 inch receiver opening # B202-2.

This bike rack is designed to fold away from the vehicle to allow access to the rear hatch of your vehicle. This bike rack is only intended to be folded down when there are not any bikes mounted to it. The vertical upright will fold to 43-1/8 inches away from the hitch pin of the vehicle. That should be plenty of clearance for you to open the hatch on your Subaru. However to ensure that you will have access I would recommend measuring the clearance needed to open the rear hatch on your car.

This bike rack extends horizontally from the hitch and then rises 1-1/2 inches from the hitch, so is will not effect the overall vehicle ground clearance. This bike rack extends from the hitch pin location 14-5/8 inches to the furthest point from the vehicle in the folded position. In the extended position it is 27-1/4 inches from the hitch pin location. Please note that these measurements are taken from the hitch pin location, and are not measured to any surface on the vehicle bumper or rear hatch.

I have provided two photos showing the dimensions of this bike rack for your reference.

This bike rack has a weight capacity of 80 pounds. Furthermore please check both the towing capacity and the tongue weight capacity of your Subaru and make sure that your vehicle and hitch are capable of supporting the weight of the bike rack (which is approximately 13 pounds) and the weight of the bikes attached. The installation instructions dictate that a hitch extender not be used with this product.

The short spacing on the rack arms is designed to carry most alternative frames bikes, such as womens or childrens bikes, and reduces the need for an adapter bar, but may not eliminate the need for an adapter bar for some bike frames. If you need an adapter bar I would recommend the Kuat Ubar Bike adapter # UB01.

If you do not already have a hitch on your Subaru and are wanting to use a trunk mounted style of bike rack I would recommend the Thule Raceway 2 # TH9001XT. If you choose to use this please make sure that if your car has a rear spoiler please make sure that it can support the weight of the bike rack and the bikes on it. An adapter bar is also occasionally needed for the Raceway and I would recommend the # TH982XT.

I have included links to the products listed above as well as some videos for you.
