Question:

Good afternoon, I installed the Curt Spectrum with their harness adapter on my 2000 Ram 2500 with tow wiring. In park, I get the blue led no trailer connected whether the trailer is plugged in or not. Driving with the trailer, it calibrates then reads no trailer connected in a constant cycle while the vehicle is moving. Without the trailer, I get the no trailer connected when I press the brake. Ive replaced the trailer plug and breakaway battery assembly, truck receptacle factory, removed many wire splice connectors, and wire. I have a 1 watt solar panel connected to the breakaway battery. My next step is to replace the entire brake assemblys and run a new 10 gauge wire to the front of the trailer and through the axles. Am I heading in the right direction? Thanks.

Yes, you are definitely on the right track. If your Curt Spectrum Trailer Brake Controller # C51170 is still not showing a trailer is connected and you have already replaced the connectors, I think it has to be a short either on the brake wiring or the brake magnets themselves.

Before replacing your brake assemblies entirely, start by just checking the wires to the brake magnets (if you have not done so yet) and look for wires that may be pinched or otherwise damaged and fix as necessary. You'll also need to make sure the ground wires are attached to bare metal surfaces and free of any paint, dirt or corrosion. If the wires are damaged you can replace it with 10 Gauge Primary Wire # 10-1-1.

If the wires are fine, you can check the magnets for copper windings coming through the magnets, heavy wear, or a short, for which they will need to be replaced.
