To install a wireless brake controller like the Curt Echo # C51180 on your 2016 Toyota Highlander you will need our 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit # ETBC7. This will connect to the factory 4-way flat pin connector that came on your Highlander. You will need to run a power wire to the front of your Highlander to power the charge line that powers the brake controller. I have linked a video below for an installation we performed on a 2019 Highlander with these same parts. Do understand that when the trailer is connected you will not be able to use your emergency flashers as they will cause the trailer brakes to activate when flashing.
For a wired brake controller I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195 as it is customizable and features a diagnostic mode to help troubleshoot braking issues with the trailer. To install this on your Highlander you will need a Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7. I have also linked a video below for the installation of these parts on a 2019 Highlander for you to reference as well. The wired route will not interfere with the flashers causing the brakes to activate like the wireless.
I personally prefer using a wired controller as there is generally less problems that develop with these controllers. The P3 also includes a quick release mount to store it away when you are not towing if you prefer not to have it always on your lower dash.
