Troubleshooting Brake Controller that Only Shows Red Dot When Brakes are Applied

Question:
I have a 2008 f150 supercrew with towing package I installed a dt 5504 control box and all it does is shows a red dot when I hit my brakes even if Im hooked to the truck or not

What your seeing on your brake controller # 5504 is that the red, white, and black wires are connected properly but on the blue wire the controller is not seeing a connection to a trailer. Basically that dot just means it can tell you are pressing the vehicle brakes.
So you need to find out what is preventing the brake controller from sensing a trailer connection. Most likely this is corrosion on the trailer wiring pins as this is a pretty common problem. Using sandpaper to clean the pins normally takes care of this. I attached a help article on troubleshooting brake controller installs for you to check out as well.
