Updated 02/26/2021 | Published 02/24/2021

Question:

I want to buy a flat tow system for my 2017 GMC Acadia. I am not sure exactly what I need. I also dont want to break the bank. I only plan to use the system for about 4 weeks a year. Any info you can provide will be awesome.

A complete flat towing system consists of base plates, a compatible tow bar, safety cables, tow bar wiring, supplemental braking system and often times a high/low adapter to allow you to keep the tow bar level during towing.

Starting with the base plate, I recommend using the Roadmaster # RM-523189-4 which has removable arms that can be removed when you're not towing; a compatible tow bar with these base plates is the Roadmaster Falcon 2 # RM-520 which will install directly into the 2" hitch on your RV and is one of the best values on the market. You'll also need safety cables like the Roadmaster # RM-643 to secure the vehicle to your RV and tow bar.

For wiring to power the lights on your Acadia, the Roadmaster Hy-Power Diode Kit # RM-154 provides you with a cost effective way to power the lights in conjunction with your RV and won't break the bank. The diodes in this kit will help prevent backfeed in the event of a short. If your RV has a 3-wire system (and is not already wired for a trailer connector) a converter is required; you'll want to use part # RM-732 for that.

You'll also need a supplemental braking system to allow the brakes in your Acadia to work in tandem with your RV brakes. For that I recommend using the Brake Buddy Stealth # HM39530 since it will install permanently and out of the way, so there's no need to setup a system each time you need to tow. It also isn't something that's going to get in the way when you're not towing and is easy to use, so it's a nice solution that is reasonably priced.

I've linked a helpful article on how to determine if you'll need a high/low adapter and the process used for measurement; I've also linked our entire selection of these adapters for you to look through if you do need one and you can choose the appropriate one.

There are also some installation and review videos of all of these parts that you might want to check out. If you have any questions on this, please let me know; we're here to help!
