Question:

I recently purchased a used trailer with a Titan Model 6 actuator. After experiencing some brake overheating problems on its first loaded road test, I decided to give the brake system an end-to-end once-over to see what needs to be repaired/replaced/lubed/etc. The damper compresses with considerable effort, but does not re-extend itself. Once you compress it, it stays compressed unless you pull it. Again, this also takes the same amount of effort as compressing it. This is just the damper by itself, removed from the actuator. I also hear a liquid splashing noise when I shake it. Is this the correct behavior, or should it re-extend itself under pressure like a shock absorber in a car?

The shock should compress when force is applied but then extended out again when no force is on it. It sounds like you have identified a faulty component. There may also be some debris that is causing it to not extend back out but given that the unit was used it is probably in need of replacement.

Chances are that other components are equally as worn so I would look closely at the master cylinder as well. If it is in need of replacement then use # T1777401 for drum brakes or # T1777405 for disc brakes.
