How does the Weight Distribution Affect Weight Put on the Ball and Receiver

Question:

Does the weight distributiing hitch 66557 add weight to the receiver mounted to the underside of the car? In other words, as the weight is distributed through the car and trailer, does the distribution of weight add downward pressure to the hitch ball, lessen downward pressure, or have no affect upon the hitch ball?

Using a weight distribution system will add more downward pressure on the hitch ball. A better way to think of this is that the weight distribution system is actually adding upward pressure to the trailer tongue. As the spring bars are tightened, they will pull downward on the trailer tongue and force the head of the weight distribution system upward. This is how the weight is distributed among the other axles. I have attached a photo showing how a weight distribution system applies pressure.

This additional downward force on the hitch ball should not be a concern unless your coupler or trailer hitch are in poor condition, if you over-tighten the spring bars or if you are using a weight distribution system that is excessively large for the tongue weight of your setup.

Weight distribution systems are rated for different tongue weight capacities. When choosing a weight distribution system, you should choose a system that can handle the tongue weight capacity of your trailer. You will also want to consider the weight of any cargo loaded behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle because that will also factor into the tongue weight capacity of the weight distribution system.

The Reese Light Duty Weight Distribution System, # 66557, that you referenced has a maximum tongue weight capacity of 400 lbs. Again this should include the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer as well as the weight of any cargo loaded behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle.
