Question:
I am looking at your pre-assembled drum brakes, AKHD-545-35-K. Is there a right or left, or are they the same?

The etrailer brand 10 inch trailer brake assemblies like # AKEBRK-35L-SA are side specific. For the left you'd use # AKEBRK-35L-SA and # AKEBRK-35R-SA for the left.
How to tell the difference? Hold the brake assembly so the magnet is at the bottom. Then look at the back of the brake assembly. If the brake magnet wires exit the backing plate on the left, it's a left hand (driver's side) assembly. If they exit on the right, it's a right hand (passenger side) assembly. Many times the brake assembly itself will have a sticker or stamping identifying it as the right or left hand assembly as well.
If you're not reusing the existing mounting hardware, you can pick up a new set as part # BRKH10BS, which includes enough hardware for 2 brake assemblies. When installing the brake assemblies, the brake magnet wires aren't polarity specific. Attach one wire to the brake circuit, ground the other to the trailer frame. It doesn't matter which wire you use for each purpose.
