Question:
Hello there – I live in California and it is legally required to carry chains/cables while traveling through the local mountain areas during the winter. It is unlikely that I would be required to install the cables on my 2018 Subaru Outback because of the AWD and I have already installed Method MR502 17x8 wheels with 235/60/R17 Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S tires. However, due to legality and just to have for emergency situations required by State Law, what size and type of cables do you recommend for my 2018 Subaru Outback with the upgraded wheels/tires? Thank you!

The owner's manual for your 2018 Subaru Outback specifically states that traditional chain link style Tire Chains should not be used because of the lack of clearance to the wheel well and between the inside of the wheel well and the suspension/braking components. It goes on to say that Class S cable chains are acceptable, and should only be used on the front wheels.
I'd recommend going with the Titan Chain # TC343DC Diagonal allow Cable Snow Chains, which is a fit for your tire size. The diamond pattern offers a smoother ride and better lateral stability than ladder-style cable chains. The cables also include the rubber tensioner which keeps the cables snug to the tire.
As a final word, if you do find yourself needing to use the cables, be extremely careful. The tires you're using are 10 mm wider than the stock tire size, so you'll have even less clearance than usual. You'd probably be best just leaving the chains in the vehicle to satisfy the legal requirement and using them only in a dire emergency at very slow speeds.
I've linked you to a demonstration/install video featuring the cable chains I recommended.
