Protecting Tekonsha P2 Brake Controller

Updated 01/11/2021 | Published 01/07/2021

Question:

I bought a Tekonsha 90885 P2 brake controller from you about a year ago and want to protect it from voltage being accidentally applied to the blue wire by the breakaway switch being activated. I believe a 50 PIV diode would work but I dont know how much current it should handle. What is the max current that can be generated by this controller? Thanks

Usually with lower quality brake controllers something like a 20-AMP # 9506P or 30-AMP Circuit Breaker # 38630 would work (20-AMP for 2/4 brake and 30-AMP for 6/8 brake applications). Most wiring harnesses come with inline fuses integrated with them but if not, you can use the circuit breakers above. The 20 or 30 AMP circuit breakers can handle the max current generated by the controller.

You are correct, a 50 PIV Diode would also be a way to protect, but the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 is a higher quality brake controller that has built in safety features so adding more would be overkill.

It has an integrated reverse battery protection that shields the brake controller and your trailer's breakaway system from shorts. It has other safety features that most of the higher end brake controllers have but the P2 also has diagnostics letting you know if you have any open ground, overload, output short, power loss or if you have no trailer connection.

If you wanted to go overboard with protection, we have two circuit breakers to choose from.
