Brake Assembly For A 1972 Apache Mesa Camper

Question:

I have a 1972 Apache Mesa camper that I need to replace the brakes on. They are 7 or 7 1/4 diameter. My initial issue is that the brake magnets are no longer available. I was going to try and retrofit some new magnets to the existing mounting post but I am worried that it will hang up in the drum. I was been told that I can switch out the backer plate with a newer model but I need to know the bolt pattern. My current plate has holes at 2 3/4 in on center. What is the pattern on these 7in brakes and what’s the possibility that my old drums will work with the new plate? Thanks for your help!

To add new brakes to your 1972 Apache Mesa Camper you would need to replace the trailer brake assembly as well as the mounting flange. The brake assembly bolt measurements are 2-7/8 center on center so they would not be compatible with your current backing plate at 2-3/4 center on center. I recommend the Brake Mounting Flange for 1-3/4" Round Trailer Axles - 2K Item # 4-34 and Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 7" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 2,000 lbs Item # AKEBRK-2. You want to make sure your axle is 1-3/4" diameter for the new mounting flange.
