Question:
I have a 2016 Toyota Tacoma double cab limited 4x4 and will be purchasing a 2020 Forest River hw29sc. My owners manual states weight distribution is needed over 5000 lbs, and this trailer has a gvwr of 4,999, but that includes over 1200 lbs of cargo, which I dont expect to be over 500 on the road the tanks would only be full in the campground. The trailer hitch weight is 371 and I have 640 in capacity, so do I need a weight distribution hitch? Even if I am below the 5000 lb limit from Toyota, would there be an advantage? Thanks

The hitch weight or tongue weight of 371 is unloaded weight. Based on your GVWR the tongue weight could be as high as 550 lbs. You base the total tongue weight of a weight distribution system off the loaded trailer tongue weight along with any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle which the hitch sees as tongue weight. This number should be in the middle of the range of your weight distribution system.
A weight distribution system will help level the vehicle and trailer versus having rear suspension squat and will also help with sway control. This is a benefit if you have a minimal load or the max capacity you can tow. I've attached an article to help with a deeper explanation if desired.
My recommendation is to use the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control - Trunnion - 8,000 lbs GTW, 800 lbs TW # FA92-00-0800 which is rated for tongue weights between 400 and 800 lbs and has sway control integrated. You will also need hitch ball # 63840 and a thin wall socket for installation. Since it is such a high torque, you can go to your nearest dealer or auto shop and have them torque it for you for a reasonable fee.
