picture of bd580405 showes space of 35/8. spec. shows 3inch span.why the difference

We pulled one of the # BD580405 locks from inventory and measured the inside span with the locking portion in place and found the span to be slightly larger than 2-7/8 inches, so let's call it 2-7/8 inches.
