How To Choose New Safety Chains, Breakaway, and Coupler for Gooseneck Trailer

Question:
I recently brought a used trailer and want to change several parts, such as Safety chains, breakaway switch, gooseneck coupler and trailer Jacks. I want to purchase all from your site but want to order the correct rating for my trailer. Please help if you can. Thank you

In order to choose the correct set of safety chains you will need to choose a set that has the length you need as well as the weight capacity which should exceed the weight of your trailer. The Safety Chain with Clevis Hook part # FCHA0050324 (2) is 42" long and would give you a 18,800 lb weight capacity. In regards to the weight of the trailer, this would be listed as gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and is the amount that the trailer can weigh fully loaded. If you don't know the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the trailer then you can search for this on a sticker/plaque up near the tongue or reach out to the manufacturer if this cannot be found. I have attached a list of all other safety chain options for you as well.
The breakaway systems are universal so you shouldn't have much to worry about here. The Hopkins Engager Push-To-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit part # 20099 is one of our most popular options and will do a fine job for you.
In order to choose a new gooseneck coupler, you need to again know the GVWR of the trailer and the size of the tube used. The Bulldog Gooseneck Coupler Base Assembly part # BD0287610300 is a popular option with 20,000 lb weight capacity and fits a standard 4" diameter outer tube.
