Do I Need a Longer Shank for the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution If I Raise My Trailer

Updated 01/14/2020 | Published 01/13/2020

Question:

Ive installed the Dexter torflex lift kit that I bought from etrailer. I expect that I should have to increase my hitch ball height on my Blue OX BXW1500. I have one more adjustment hole on my receiver. 1 Assuming the dealer recently setup my 7 hole receiver correctly, is 1.25inch height increase on my receiver going to be enough? 2 What size socket is needed for the nuts? A SwayPro owners manual, I found with difficulty, says nothing. My calipers measure the nuts at 1.10 inches and my 30mm socket is to loose.à 3 That manual says 257 ft/lbs of torque on the nuts. Is that correct? I had to put 130 ft/lbs on the lift kit bolts. It took 2 of us pulling on the torque wrench. My torque wrench only goes to 150 ft/lbs. I would expect a torque wrench capable of 257 ft/lbs would have to 6 feet long or hydraulic.

The Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control part # BXW1500 has a max rise of 8" and max drop of 2". If the distance from the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube opening is not within the range above when compared to the distance from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler while level then you will need a new shank. The lift kits we offer all provide more than 1-1/4" so it would indeed appear you need a shank with more rise/drop. The Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution Shank part # BXW4002 has a max rise of 10-1/2" and drop of 4-1/2" so it should work for you.

In regards to the head bolts, you will need to use a 1-1/8" socket and torque the bolts to 257 ft. lbs. There are hand held torque wrenches available which can reach this figure but most customers will just torque the bolts to yield as these wrenches are not easily attainable.
