How to Add Clearance Between 2015 Ram 1500 and Travel Trailer Without Using an Extension

I have a 2015 Ram 1500 Big Horn, that I use to haul a travel trailer when loaded that weighs around 4500 lbs. I wanted to use the road master 7 3/4” extension to provide enough clearance. I have read about losing 50 percent capacity when using an extender. I use a weight distribution set up now so using a longer ball wouldn’t work. Could you provide me with what you think my best option would be. I really only need around the 7 to 8 inches extra. Thank you for your help.

Thank you for all of the details!

It is true that using a hitch extender will reduce the weight capacity of the trailer hitch on your 2015 Ram 1500 (or any vehicle for that matter) by 50% so unless your hitch is rated high enough to take the hit and still be rated higher than your towing setup we need to look at another option.

I'm not sure why you need the clearance or what weight distribution (WD) system you currently have but most WD systems use the same type of design so you might be able to use the Equal-i-zer WD Shank # EQ90-02-4600 which measures 14" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the pin holes used for the head unit. This would be the best option for your application.

If you are just looking for some extra room to lower your tailgate and your trailer jack is in the way (which is a common reason for wanting to use an extension) then you can also either rotate your trailer jack or maybe swap out your tailgate for one with a louvered design like part # VGD-10-4000. The cutout for this tailgate is about 12" so it should definitely be enough if you're just looking for tailgate clearance. You can add the insert # VI-4000 and the insert kit # 4000-V for more privacy, plus this tailgate does come with a lock so you can still have some security. I have attached an installation video of this product on a '15 Ram 1500 that you can reference.

If neither of these options are something that will work for your application just let me know what WD system you currently have and what you are needing the clearance for and I can help you explore some other options if they're available.
