Reese Dual-Cam Sway Control Mounting Brackets are Loose On the Trailer Frame

Updated 03/26/2012 | Published 03/25/2012

Question:

The Reese dual cam brackets that bolt to the trailer frame, say not to drill holes all the way thru both sides of the frame for Box type frame. I have one bracket that the bolts will not stay tight, the threads appear to be stripped. How does one deal with this? It does not appear that a larger bolt will fit in the dual cam bracket.

First, if the hole has become enlarged making the bolt loose or damaging the threads, this could indicate that the system is overloaded. Make sure to stay within the capacity of the system to avoid damage. Taking excessively tight turns can also have a negative impact on the system.

I spoke with my contact at Reese and he said that in this case you can run a bolt all the way through the frame. You have to use caution to not over tighten it though because with a hollow channel (box frame) you could crush the trailer frame if torqued down too much.
