What Grade Bolts for Bulldog Heavy-Duty Cast Head Coupler and Can it be Welded to Trailer Frame
Updated 09/09/2019 | Published 09/07/2019 >
Question:
what should the length of the specified bolts be for the BD44150WH301? For the 3/8 inch and the 1/2 inch bolts to purchase, what is the length they should be, and should they have lock washers with the nuts? Should they be #8 grade bolts? Can this coupler also be welded in addition to bolted on for added strength?

I took a look at the instructions of the Bulldog Heavy-Duty Cast Head Coupler w/ Wedge Latch # BD44150WH301 and it specifies using grade 5 bolts with lock nuts. However, there is not a specified length for the bolts, and that will simply depend on the length you need to properly secure the bolts to your trailer.
This is a bolt-on coupler but there is the same coupler which can be welded on if you prefer to go that route, the Bulldog Heavy-Duty Cast Head Coupler w/ Wedge Latch # BD44150WQ317. Like the bolt-on option, this is an A-frame coupler with a 15,000 lb capacity which accepts a 2-5/16" hitch ball. The cut out I added are from the directions that specify the requirements for welding this coupler on.
I have added links to video reviews of both couplers for you to check out as well.
