Bike Rack Needed to Clear Tailgate on Short Bed Pickup

Will this or any platform style hitch mounted bike rack allow me to lower my tailgate without removing the rack completely? I know there are swing mounts but they break the bank. I have a cover on my 5 1/2foot truck bed so I cant seamlessly use a bed mounted solution. Both the Kuat Transfer and Thule T1 look like they need more than the 11 inch clearance I have between the top of my receiver and the bottom of my tailgate.

For your situation I believe that the Kuat Transfer 1 # TS01B is going to be your best bet because when I pulled the Thule T1 # TH9041 from the warehouse I found that from the center of the hitch pin hole to the middle of the wheel tray is about 22-1/4" (see attached photo). Since the T1 doesn't have a tilting feature it is more likely that your handlebar may interact with your tailgate but you can test it out on your end by holding your bike in this general area.

The Transfer on the other hand has a tilting feature that lets your bike sit at a 45 degree angle so we know the bike will clear the tailgate. The only measurement that you need to check is that your tailgate won't come into contact with the pivot point on the rack. If you check out the attached dimensional photo you can see that this point is located 7-1/2" from the center of the hitch pin hole and is 10-5/8" higher than the center of the hitch pin hole. As long as your tailgate won't come in contact with this point you will be good to go!

If either of these options don't work just let me know and I can help you find another solution.
