How To Open the BAKFlip MX4 If Locked Out of the Truck Bed

Question:
How secure is the mx4 cover? Can you use a coat hanger in between the tailgate and cover to open the cover?

The BAKFlip MX4 Hard Tonneau Cover part # BAK48120 which is a fit for 2014 - 2018 GMC Sierra/Chevrolet Silverado 1500's with the 5-1/2' bed is very secure. In order to access the release string for the cover you would need access to inside the bed which could only be done with the tailgate down. However, I suppose it would be possible to bend a coat hanger and somehow pull the release string but I cannot recommend this as it would likely damage the weather seal. I spoke with BAKFlip and the only advice they were able to provide is to call a locksmith for the tailgate but I am sure that has already crossed your mind.

Just installed one of these and wanted to test it out. You can open it up with a coat hanger in seconds with no damage at all to the weather seal. There is absolutely no security to this bed cover.

I have a 2014 Tacoma Pre-runner with a Bak Flip installed. My tailgate latch would not unlock. I had the same idea that you had of using a coat hanger to pull the cable and did just that and it worked great. I was able to lift up on the cover just enough to slide the handle of pliers in to hold the cover up enough to see the cable and used a wire hanger to pull the cable and unlatch the cover.
