Canoe Carrier Recommendation for 2017 Honda CR-V with Factory Crossbars

The factory racks on my 2017 Honda CRV are only 37inch and 34.5inch wide, while my canoe is 35.5inch across the gunwales at the widest point. That doesnt provide enough room for me to mount these Yakima carriers so that the canoe will fit within the mounts. If the purpose of the mounts is to resist side-to-side movement, can the mounts be positioned to sit inside the gunwales and still work properly? Thanks.

I have a solution for you, but I can't recommend you use the Yakima KeelOver part # Y04069 backwards. Instead you'd want to use Swagman Exo Aero # S65145 which installs on the bars and then allows you to carry the canoe right side up and would prevent the width issues you mentioned. I attached a picture of it used to carry a kayak but it would work with a canoe in the same way.
