Do Hangers Need to be Welded to Install
Published 09/12/2018 >
Question:
What is the best practice for installing hangers? Does it require welding? Ive gotten my measurements and location for my tandem axle trailer set up. I just need to purchase a APT5 kit. My current trailer is a single axle trailer with a 3500 lbs axle and leaf spring. Looking to convert it to a tandem axle 3500 lbs axle and 3500 leaf spring. does it make sense that i expect the tandem axle trailer to be able to load 7000 lbs?

Yes the hangers from Hanger Kit # APT5 must be welded to your trailer's frame by a qualified welder, preferably one with experience on trailers.
As for the load capacity of the trailer, that will depend on the part of the trailer with the lowest capacity; for example if you have a pair of 3,500 lb axles the trailer bed still needs to be rated for 7,000 lbs of cargo. If it is rated for 5,000 lbs that means your trailer's capacity is 5,000 lbs no matter what axles you have.
I have added a link to a help article on trailer suspension for you to check out as well which I highly recommend reading.
