  • Limited Tire Clearance with Stock Tire Size on a 2006 Forest River Cherokee 27Q
We recommend having a minimum of 3" between the top of the tire and bottom of the fender in order to allow for proper suspension travel. However, based on the photo you sent I believe you need new leaf springs as the ones you have appear to be almost completely flat. This has then compromised your tire clearance. The flattened leaf springs could either be a result of overloading the trailer or just general wear. In order to replace them you would need to know your axle capacity and the...

  • Where to Place Axles on 14 Foot Long Tandem Axle
To determine the location for the front and rear hangers on your tandem axle trailer you will first need to make sure that you have the correct center point for your equalizer hanger. The center point of your equalizer hanger needs to be located where you will have 60 percent of the frame of the trailer in front of the center of the equalizer hanger and 40 percent behind the center of the equalizer hanger. For example, if the trailers frames length is 14 feet, then the center-line location...

  • What Is The Purpose Of Steel band On Leaf Springs
The leaf springs are normally installed with the band forward of the axle, but it is not something that has to be done that way. The steel band is called the rebound clip. Their main purpose is to help keep the main leaf from breaking on a rebound. When the weight of a vehicle or trailer is on the spring, all of the leaves work together to support the spring above them. If the wheel drops for any reason the total weight of the axle falls on the main leaf if there are no rebound clips....

  • Rebuilding a Tandem Axle Trailer with 6,000 Lb - 7,200 Lb Axles
I would love to help but are you sure that you have space to lower the trailer 4" - 6"? You will need at least 3" from the top of the tire to the bottom of the fender in order to allow for proper suspension travel. It looks like the fenders on the trailer now will not allow for this therefore I would you to do some measuring before any of the new parts are purchased. I would also need more info on the trailer such as axle capacity (see center label), leaf spring length (eye to eye), leaf...

  • 2 inch Tall Hanger Kit with 5-3/4 inch Long Equalizers
The closest kit we have to what you are looking for is the part # K71-359-00 which is for 1-3/4 inch wide leaf springs, has equalizers that are 5-3/4 inches long bolt center to bolt center, has 2 inch tall hangers, but it has shackles that are a little shorter at 2-1/4 inch and has bronze bushings. It does come with 9/16 inch diameter bolts.

  • Troubleshooting Broken Leaf Spring On a Boat Trailer With Tandem Axles Mounted Individually
I recommend any trailer with a tandem axle setup use an equalizer regardless of the amount of leaves in the spring or if it is a double eye or slipper spring design. On a system like your trailer where each axle is mounted individually and not connected one axle will carry more of its share of the weight when one axle lowers due to road angles or unlevel trailer positioning. An equalizer setup like the Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit # APT3 will allow the suspension to continue to spread...

  • What Is The Difference Between Different Sized Hangers, Equalizers, And Shackle Straps
Leaf spring hangers come in different heights to provide more or less clearance between the trailer body and the suspension. Manufacturers determine the best spacing for the axles and sizes of the hangers, leaf springs, equalizers, and shackle straps based on a number of factors to provide a stable base capable of handling the weight and any bumps in the road along the way. When replacing these components we always recommend matching the same dimensions to maintain the same suspension...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Suspension that Shackle and Equalizer Flip Over
First thing you want to do is verify that you are using the correct dimensions for your hanger spacing on your trailer. The distance between the center hanger and either of the outside hangers should be right at 29-1/2 inches. There should be at least 3-1/2 inches from the center of the axle o the trailer frame. Also, you need to make sure your trailer is being towed level. If your trailer is nose high or low that can cause the suspension of a tandem axle trailer to be unbalanced. I attached...

  • Why Do Trailer Hanger/Equalizer Kits all Use Different Height Suspension Hangers
When the suspension hangers, equalizers, and shackles are installed from a kit like the part # APT3 the goal is to have the leaf spring as level as possible. The different height hangers is offset by the height of the equalizer and shackles so that when it's all said and down everything is at a level height. Check out the picture I attached of a kit like this installed to get an idea. The great thing about these kits is that the correct height of everything is already all worked out.

  • Axle to Frame Height Difference Between Tandem Axle Hanger Kits # APT3 and # APT5
We don't have CAD drawings we can give out for our hanger kits but I can help give you info to help you determine what the height of your axles relative to your trailer frame would be with each kit. With the part # APT5 it will give you approximately 4-1/2 inch to 5 inch of clearance and the part # APT3 will give you approximately 3-1/2 inch to 3-3/4 inch.

  • How To Determine Where Leaf Spring Hangers Should Be Placed
The leaf spring hanger positions are largely dependent on which exact equalizers, exact leaf springs, and exact shackle straps you will be using as the length of these components is then what makes up the hanger positions. That said, I would not be able to provide exact distances with the information provided. For example, if you were to use the Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double-Eye Springs part # APT3 with the 5-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 6,000-lb Trailer Axles part # e34SR....

  • Recommended Parts For Suspension Building Car Hauler Suspension With Tandem 3,500LB Axles
Andy, while I do like your Axle # e95SR and U-Bolt Kit # CE23002 selection of which you will need 2 of each I do have another recommendation for the suspension kit. The Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit # APT3 you found has longer equalizers designed for a 35" spacing used on larger axles. Also I do not like the shackle straps it comes with either as they are a thin steel and over time the holes will likely start to elongate. Instead you should use the Dexter Heavy-Duty Suspension Kit # K71-359-00...

  • Hanger Spacing Recommendation for a Tandem Axle Trailer with 25-1/8 inch Long Leaf Springs
For a 25-1/4 inch long spring like the part # e54SR you would want to go with 29-1/2 inches from the front to the center hanger and also 29-1/2 inches between the center and rear hanger. For a hanger kit we often recommend the part # APT3 which uses 2-5/8 inch long shackles that are pretty close to the length of your shackles.

  • Hanger Spacing for 3,500 Pound Axle Leaf Spring # e59SR on Tandem Axle Trailer
I think your idea is right on the money. Take the information from the 25-1/4 inch spring hanger spacing and subtract 2 inches. The subtraction will be 1 inch from the front hanger to the center hanger and another 1 inch from the center hanger to the rear hanger. Both of those measurements should be roughly 28-1/2 inches if using hanger kit # APT3. Using u-bolts for 3 inch diameter trailer axles is not a good idea on an axle that is 2-3/4 inches in diameter. It can allow for movement and...

Equalizer # TREQE1 does not have a weight capacity itself. It isn't bearing much of the weight compared to other components in a trailer suspension set up. If you have a tandem axle trailer then you could potentially use kit # APT5, # APT3, # APT9, # APT8, # APT7, or # APT3HD. All of these kits have the 7-3/4 inch long equalizers. Typically when building a tandem axle trailer I recommend using either the # APT3 or # APT5 Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit. These are the most common kits used for utility trailers and parts are readily available. The # APT5 kit is by far the most common because all the hangers are the same height and provide good tire clearance. There are a lot of variables when selecting a hanger kit. First you should select a kit that will accommodate the wheel and tire combination you are using. The...

  • 3,500 lb Leaf Springs and Hanger Kit Recommendation for a Mobile Home Trailer
Mobile home axles/suspension are typically designed for one time use, so picking out components to work with mobile home components can be tricky. Your best bet is to do what you did with your axles and just start over with quality stuff that you will know will work. First let's start with a spring. For a 3,500 lb spring the part # e54SR would be a great choice. For a u-bolt kit you would want part # APUBR-1. For a tandem axle hanger kit you would want the part # APT3. For a bolt you would...

  • Can Tandem Axle Spring Hanger Spacing Be Increased to 30-1/4-Inches to Fit Larger 235/80R16 Tires
For your 3-inch axles the normal spacing of the hangers included in the DexterTandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit is 29-1/2-inches. You can probably space them the 3/4-inches further apart, to a spacing of 30-1/4-inches, without too much impact on the suspension geometry. However, you may be able to compensate for this change by using longer shackle straps. The shackle straps supplied with the kit are part # 115052 which are 2-5/8-inches long. • Why Is Trailer Suspension Shackle Angled and Not Totally Vertical
You'll want the shackle hanging at a slight angle so that it doesn't want to flip upside down at any point. If it's totally vertical it will want to flip over much easier. Adding an axle certainly could be done while still using the old axle. It would be a matter of getting a tandem hanger kit like part # APT3 with the new axle.
