Can I Upgrade My Trailer Tires From Size 5.7-8 to 5.30-12

Published 07/18/2018

Question:

I am replacing the tires and wheels on my boat trailer. The current setup is 5.7-8 with a 5x4.5 bolt pattern I think, I havent measured the bolt pattern but I think its the only 5 bolt option for this size. Id like to go with a larger tire size given the weight of my boat. I suspect the trailer was designed for larger tires. The current tires look very small on the trailer and under the fenders. My hub diameter is 2.6inch and I have wheel studs. I believe this means its lug centric and I can use a larger tire/wheel with a larger pilot hole, like this one # AM30861 Am I correct on this or am I missing something. Wanted to check before placing an order! I attached a pic if that helps. Thank you!

As long as you have at least 2-3 inches from the sidewall to the trailer and at least 4 inches from the tread to the underside of the fender, you will have enough clearance to go with a larger tire and wheel setup.

The Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30861 that you mentioned has an of load capacity of 1,250, an outer diameter when inflated of 21.9" and the section width is 5.5". Take the measurements of the newer larger tires to measure and compare them to your current tires in order to ensure you have the proper clearance with the trailer frame and the inside wall of the tire.

You will want to be sure that whatever tires you choose are rated for the weight capacity of the boat and trailer. This tire and wheel combo has a load rating of 1,250 at 105 PSI.

Usually the weight capacity rating will be found on a specs tag or sticker at the front drivers side of the trailer. If you don't have this specs tag on the trailer, I recommend getting the trailer weighed.

As long as the weight capacity, tire clearance and tire overload are not a factor, you will be able to upgrade your tires to a larger size.
