Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

  • How to Determine Correct Replacement Wheel/Tire Combo for 1995 Jayco Pop-Up Camper
The modern tire size for the 20.5 x 8.0-10 tire is 205/65-10. The exact wheel and tire combo you need will depend on the wheel bolt pattern used by your pop-up (4 lug on 4 inch bolt circle, 5 lug on 4-1/2 inch bolt circle or 5 lug on 5-1/2 inch bolt circle) as well as the load rating needed. You'll want to choose a two wheel/tires with a combined between the two load rating greater than the GVWR of the pop-up. The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating represents the maximum the pop-up can weigh...

  • What 20.5 x 8 x 10 Tire/Wheel Combination do You Recommend with a 2-1/2" Center Hub Hole Diameter?
While we definitely have a tire size of 20.5 x 8 x 10 (also written as 215/60-8), we only carry wheels that have a 2-1/2 inch center hole diameter. Since your current wheel has a 2-3/4 inch diameter hole, this provides you with clearance. You need to make sure that your hub's center hole provides enough clearance for where a 2-1/2" wheel diameter. For this reason, I recommend measuring your hub's center hole with calipers like the # PTW80157 to make sure there is enough space between your...

Hi Chuck; a wheel and tire like the Kenda 205/65-10 # AM3H410 you ordered will not arrive at the max psi. You will need to fill it up to 70 psi before using the tire. What kind of trailer do you have?

  • Can 205/65-10 Tires be Upgraded to a Larger Size For Greater Ground Clearance
In order to find if your 205/65-10 tires like the # AM3H410 can be upgraded to a larger size without modifying your camper you will need to take a few things into account. This will largely depend on what size tire you would like to add and how much additional ground clearance you are looking for. The first is your current bolt pattern. For example, if you wanted to use a 145/80-12 tire like the # AM35351DX and you currently have a 4 on 4 bolt pattern you wouldn't have an issue finding...

To upgrade to a larger tire you will have to upgrade to a larger wheel as well, and with that in mind you will want to make sure that the bolt pattern of your new wheel and tires match the existing bolt pattern on your current trailer. I have included a helpful article explaining how to determine the bolt pattern of your existing wheels. Depending on the existing bolt pattern on that your trailer is currently set up for I recommend the following: 4.80-12 - 4 on 4 bolt pattern # AM30620;...

The default speed rating for a trailer tire is 65-mph. When the tire can handle higher speeds we will explicitly call this out in the tire specs. If we do not indicate a speed rating then it is 65-mph. In the tire size ST205/65-10 we offer four tire-only options from Kenda in B, C, D and E load ranges. All are shown on the linked page. Bias type tire # AM1HP56 is rated N, up to 87-mph, but all of the others are 65-mph. For a wheel/tire combination with a 4-bolt wheel mated to a ST205/65-10...

I attached a help article on determining bolt pattern for you to check out as well. It is perfectly fine to go with a smaller wheel/tire as long as you have the capacity needed. We offer a 5.30-12 bias ply tire in load range C as # AM10066 or load range B as part # AM10064. These aren't what most would typically refer to as 'off road' trailer tires, but because bias ply tires have a stronger and thicker sidewall, they'll preform better in off-road situations than a comparable radial tire would. • Installing Alternate Wider Wheels/Tires for Older Jayco Pop-Up Camper Trailer
First, you do not want to run your camper's tires under-inflated. Trailer tires, all of them, are designed to be operated at their full rated pressure as indicated on the side wall. I do realize your intent to gain a wider footprint through a more flexible tire surface, but this is not recommended for safety reasons.
