Question:
That's really good info! Thanks so much! Here's kind of a detailed followup question for you... Can you tell me how compact both carriers can be made in terms of total length when mounted on the hitch? That is to say, as folded up as possible when unloaded, how far back from the hitch bolt would both carriers extend when collapsed as much as possible? I'm trying to find out if I can leave one or both of these carriers attached and folded up and still fit in my garage.

The Hollywood Racks Destination 2 Bike Platform Rack # HLY94FR is a very easy to use carrier that weighs only 20 lbs and is designed to be folded up against the vehicle when not in use. The anti-rattle hitch lock knob is easy to use and won't require a socket wrench for installation and removal.
The Kuat Sherpa 2.0 2-Bike Platform Rack - 1-1/4" Hitches # SH12G or the 2 inch hitch version # SH22G also has some perks. It does have the anti-rattle knob attachment, but the nicer elements are that it will fold close to your vehicle when not in use and will hold the bikes by the wheels. This offers no frame contact and also doesn't require lifting your bike over a center mast. The 2 inch version is 32 lbs total weight and the 1-1/4 inch version is that same 32 lbs.
If you will be loading in and out of doorways and up/down stairs in the city, the Hollywood Racks Destination is the more convenient option.
