What is Typical Tongue Weight Relative to Trailer Weight

Question:

I was looking at your tongue couplers. I need to tow 14,000 lbs of boat and trailer. Can you help me with any information on how to balance tongue weight? Thanks

Expert Reply:

To get the best towing experience you want to have your trailer tongue weight between 10 and 15 percent of the total trailer weight. So for a trailer that weighs 14,000 lbs ideally you'd have between 1,400 and 2,100 lbs of tongue weight. With that much weight though being closer to 10 percent would be better. If you get below 10 percent your trailer will start wanting to sway.
