New Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Trailer Brakes are Not Locking Up

Question:

This is my first experience with electric trailer brakes, and Im not sure if what I am feeling is correct or not. I installed PN 23-468-469 on a 5x8 enclosed trailer which weights about 1,000lbs empty. I did some test towing today with the trailer empty to make sure the brakes got adjusted and learn how the brakes react. After driving around a while I turned the gain on the brake controller from 5 to 10, expecting to feel the brakes lock up. I can feel them applying firmly, and when hitting a bump, they will give out a short screech, but they will not lock up. I dont think wiring is an issue because I am seeing over 11v at the magnets, and the trailer isnt pulling to one side. Am I wrong in expecting the brakes to lock up on an axle with around 1000lbs and 13inch tires?

You are not wrong but at the same time you do not want trailer brakes to lock up. The brakes you have, # 23-468-469, are self-adjusting but it takes some time for the shoes to extend out far enough for normal braking.

This is why we recommend making an initial adjustment at the time of installation. That way you don't have to wait for them to adjust out themselves. After this initial adjustment you won't have to adjust them again. I have included a link to a video that shows how to make this initial adjustment.
