Recommendation For Brake Controller For 2017 RAV4 Hybrid With Regenerative Brakes

Question:

I have a 2017 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. The vehicle is rated to tow 1740 pounds and I had a dealer install a hitch with a seven blade connector but with only wired 4 wires for trailer lights was connected. No brake wire or power. According to the dealer the RAV4 Hybrid with the regenerative brakes cannot be spliced into to operate trailer brakes. My trailer is 1200 pounds and easily stopped on level road without using the installed electric trailer brakes. But living in the part of the country here the Rocky Mountains are close by I’m reluctant to venture onto mountain roads without a trailer brake. Is there a proportional brake system that would operate electric trailer brakes without the need to connect to the vehicle brakes. I’ve read about the Tekonsha Prodigy RF Wireless Trailer Brake Controller # TK94FR. I’m thinking this product might work!!!!!

I contacted the manufacturer and the Tekonsha Prodigy RF Wireless Trailer Brake Controller, Item # TK94FR, will work with your 2017 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. When it comes to wiring, you do not have to connect to the brake wires but will need to connect to right and left turn wires and battery/power circuit. Make sure to follow the installation instructions closely as well as the pairing instructions.
