We are using these stairs to assist some older folks onto a parade float - we've used a step ladder in the past. The concern we had over the railing you referenced is that it needs to mount to the side of a "trailer" or "RV" - and in this case, we are attaching the stairs to a flatbed trailer at approximately 48" height. Do you have any suggestions for a railing that would work in that situation?

Absolutely, in order to add a handrail to the Brophy Camper Scissor Steps part # AS25 you will want to use the Aluminum Hand Rail part # AHR5. This handrail is easy to install and is made of a lightweight aluminum. I have attached an installation video of the rail for you as well.
