Can a Lubricant be Used With an Equalizer Weight Distribution Hitch?
Updated 01/29/2018 | Published 01/28/2018 >
Question:
We tow an enclosed aircraft trailer behind a Chevy 3500 Express camper van. My wife objects to the noise of our Equalizer 4 point anti sway weight distribution hitch particularly when i get rolling early and she is asleep in the back of the camper van. I recall Equalizer instructions advise not to put grease on the four friction points but it seems from other internet discussion sites that grease is routinely used. It seems to me that a lubricant would defeat anti sway to some degree. Am I missing something on that point? I read that Equalizer applied something like brake pad material to the friction points on the bars but it did not stay in place well and I have not noticed that material in advertisements. Is noise reduction available? I have 14 trailers and find that good towing physics starting with tow vehicle and then trailer set up are primary along with towing skill/attention then good anti sway with weight distribution play a valuable secondary role.

There is a noise reduction lubricant available, the Equal-i-zer High-Performance Lubricant # EQ91-00-4250. This is designed to reduce the noise of their weight distribution systems, though you are correct that using the lubricant on the sway control brackets will hamper that ability, at least to a point. The system will still be effective, and since you very clearly understand that proper set-up/load distribution and attention to how you drive are important factors in controlling your trailers, this is a product I would recommend for you.
You will be able to apply this lubricant to not only the spring bar sockets but also the hitch ball and weight distribution head to reduce as much noise as possible so your wife can rest a bit more soundly.
