Could Bent RV Tire Spindle Cause Trailer Sway

Question:

We are having some issues with sway at 65 MPH with our travel trailer. We have a great weight distribution system and our truck is big enough for the trailer. But when we put a rod against the tires, one tire has a 1/2” gap. Is this causing sway?

Thank you for the photo of your trailer tire. I cannot tell for sure from the photo but if you suspect that you could have a bent spindle on at least that one wheel and you are experiencing sway from the trailer at highway speed despite using a weight distribution/sway control hitch then I urge you to take the trailer to a shop that can check the condition of the axle and spindles.

It is certainly possible that a good hit from road debris (or from a curb that was closer than you thought) could bend the spindle enough to cause problems. Trailer suspensions rely on correct alignment of all parts for proper operation.

Of course, you also want to ensure you are using trailer tires (not passenger car tires) on the trailer and that they are rated for the weight load on them and for the speeds you are driving. Trailer tires are made in various weight carrying ranges and speed ranges too.

If it is only the spindle that was damaged (and the technician determines the axle is still okay) the spindle cn be cut off and a new one welded in its place.
