Can Tire and Aluminum Wheel Combo # LH84VR Handle a Boat that Weighs 8,000 Pounds
Updated 06/20/2011 | Published 06/18/2011 >
Question:
We have a Magic Tilt boat trailer with Karrier ST215 75R14 tires mounted on galvanized wheels. We need to replace the tires, and would like a better looking wheel aluminum, as opposed to galvanized. The Condor wheel is listed as 14x51/2 wide, whereas the galvanized wheel for that same tire is 14x6 wide. We want this replacement to be safe. Would the aluminum wheel width measuring 1/2 narrower be a potential problem? Is the Dexstar wheel sufficiently sturdy to handle the trailer loads? We pull a 26 boat that weights 8,000 pounds. Thank you for your assistance.

A trailer tire that is 215/75-14, will actually fit a range of wheel widths. It will fit a 5-1/2, 6, 6-1/2, and 7 inch wide wheel. Since the tire is designed to fit this range, including the 5-1/2 inch wide wheel that comes with Tire and Wheel Combo, # AM32195, it will be safe. The tire and wheel combo you have referenced, # LH84VR, is a 205/75-14 size.
The tire has a capacity of 1,870 pounds at 50 psi. To reach 8,000 pounds, you would need 6 of these tires and wheels. If your boat trailer has 3 axles, then 6 of these tire and wheel combos would be more than enough to handle the 8,000 pound load. But if the trailer has 2 axles, 4 of these tire and wheel combos would fall short of the capacity you need.
I have included a link to some of our tire FAQ articles that contains a lot of useful information on trailer tires.
