How to Determine Correct Tire Pressure for Trailer Tire

Updated 07/24/2024 | Published 06/06/2015

Question:

What is the correct tire pressure. Side wall reads 65 psi for 2040 lb load range but lists 40 psi max to seat bead. Will run these tires on RPod 172 travel trailer approximate weight 3800 lb.

In this instance, the tire pressure should be maintained at 65 PSI.

Unlike tires on a passenger vehicle that might have an acceptable range of tire pressures, trailer tires should always be ran at the maximum pressure listed on the tire sidewall. Running the tires at a lower pressure would cause heat build-up, which over time will make your tires wear out more quickly. Decreasing the pressure will also decrease the load capacity of the tire.

I have a cargo trailer that bounces excessively when empty. Radial tires, maximum sidewall pressure 50 psi. Maximum trailer loaded weight is 2990 lbs and when empty 900 lbs. How low can I run these tires when trailer is empty to reduce bounce? I've tried to find information on pressure versus load and not having much luck. I can monitor tire temperature with infrared thermometer.

@RichG You could reduce the tire pressure by about 10 psi and still be safe, however we're usually pretty reluctant to recommend that due to the fear that the user will forget to reinflate the tires before loading the trailer.
