Is Friction Pad Material on EAZ Weight Distribution Susceptible to Weather and Does it Make Noise
Published 11/01/2017 >
Question:
Hello, I have a 2018 Shadow Cruiser 26 foot TT being towed behind a 2016 Durango with an EAZ-LIFT pro series hitch rated for 10k. The trailer is GAWR rated at 6000 lbs. I have a few questions for you. Is the brake material inside the friction sway control susceptible to wet weather and moisture then to arid hot heat of summer? Will this cause the unit to groan extremely loudly and even noticeably at highway speeds? The unit I have sat for several years in a drafty and wet garage in the winter to the high heat of Northern California summer and was never used until I obtained it this last summer. I do not believe the unit was ever submerged in water and the brake material appears ok but the noise is horrible and I have had many passers by ask if my vehicle is ok. Thank you for your help.

All weight distribution systems will make noise. Some more than others. Those that use friction sway control like what you are describing do make more noise. On friction systems where the sway control is built in the wet weather isn't an issue. The material is as susceptible to weather conditions the same as brake pad material would be. Heat is definitely not an issue. Rain can decrease performance. You can use a wire brush or sanding pad to remove dust or sediment from the pad surface which should help.
At highway speed the noise should not be noticeable unless it is trying to correct a major swaying event.
It is also important to make sure the system is set up properly. Too much tension on the spring bars can lead to excessive noise. To make sure it is set up properly you can consult the manual. If you do not have the manual the EAZ systems are made by Camco.
