In this case, you'll want to make sure that you are pulling towards you when you're starting to load the kayak back up to the top of the vehicle. You will need to pull a little harder than you think you would when you first depress the handles.
I've included a video of our demo team loading a kayak using the Thule Hullavator Pro, part # TH898 so you can follow along and watch their process.
If the arms are damaged, then you'll want to purchase replacement arms, as part # TH753352303.
