Why is My Trailer Axle Underrated

Updated 06/20/2017 | Published 06/19/2017

Question:

I bought a single axle ATV trailer that appears to have a 3500# axle. Im concerned now as the trailer is built to hold 4 ATVs, all of which are around 750# which comes to 3000#. I cant imagine that the trailer weighs any less than 1000#. Have I purchased a 4 slot ATV trailer that has an underrated axle?

Expert Reply:

Actually that's quite common.

The axle may be rated up to 3,500 pounds and the trailer's total weight may be over that but you have to keep in mind not all of the trailer's weight is on the axle. You should have between 10 to 15 percent of the trailer's total weight on its tongue which means the rear axle of your tow vehicle (Or the jack when not connected) will be taking the weight.

Find the gross trailer weight and abide by that. Unless the axle is way underrated it isn't anything to worry about.
