Question:

Were about to buy an RV, and we have a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox V6 with AWD, that wed like to have with us when camping. Can such a drivetrain be flat-towed, or would I need to trailer it? Our other vehicle is a 2011 Silverado 1500, 2wd, auto, G80 locking differential. Id be willing to tow it as an alternative to trailering the Equinox, but I already cant get the wife to drive it as shes spoiled to the Equinox. Thanks so much for your assistance.

I checked the Owner's Manual for a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox AWD and it states that this model vehicle can be both flat towed or trailer towed behind a RV.

If you choose to flat tow, then there are many components that are needed to safely flat tow vehicle behind your RV. You will need base plates, tow bar set-up, safety chains, a lighting solution and a supplemental braking system. Some applications also may need a high-low adapter to make sure the tow bars are level when towing.

For base plates I recommend the Roadmaster EZ5 Base Plate Kit, # RM-523160-5. This kit is custom-fit for your vehicle and include removable drawbars to give vehicle an invisible appearance when not towing.

I recommend the Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar, # RM-520, for your application. The Falcon 2 has a self-aligning design that makes hook ups easy. The Falcon 2 is compatible to the EZ5 base plate and will not need to use the included quick-disconnect for connection between RV and your vehicle. For safety cables I recommend the Roadmaster 64" Single Hook, Straight Safety Cables, # RM-645.

For a lighting solution I recommend the Roadmaster Universal Hy-Power Diode Wiring Kit, # RM-154. The lighting kit connects your Equinox's tail, turn, and stop lights to your RV. The kit uses diodes to prevent electrical feedback and damage to your vehicle's electrical components.

You may also need a high/low adapter to keep the tow bar level. I have linked a help article showing how to measure and a link to the high/low adapters we carry.

And finally, most states now require supplemental braking on the vehicle being flat towed. One of the preferred systems for our installers and what I recommend is the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO proportional system, # SM99251. It will apply the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both vehicles.
